About How to Nappy

Welcome to How to Nappy - a nappy using guide.

How to Nappy has been written to provide a comprehensive guide to using both traditional and modern washable nappies.  Cloth nappies can provide superior containment, absorbency and comfort over disposable nappies. With this guide we aim to show you how to get the best out of your nappies and divulge a lot of the tricks and tweaks we have learnt over the past few years for different nappy systems.  We've collected tips from other nappy users, from health visitors, midwives and parents to provide the definitive guide to all aspects of reusable nappies.

We have articles about every aspect of washable nappies, from basic advice on nappy changing, to specific instructions by type or brand; from folds for terry squares and prefolds, using Nappi Nippas, reducing the height for Motherease one size or stuffing Fuzzi Bunz to boosting a Bamboozle from Tots Bots.  We've a comprehensive section on washing and care for your nappies, wraps or wool wraps, plus tips for child care, out and about with your cloth nappies, and dealing with issues such as nappy rash.  We've also included comprehensive tips on increasing absorbency and a troubleshooting guide for solving nappy leaks.

For older babies we've a section on potty training and night nappies too - the average age of potty training has increased by 6 months over the past 5 to 6 years with the advent of the much advertised pull-ups on TV - they're not necessary and often confusing for children - we offer suggestions for potty training your child without the additional expense of special nappies or training pants.

With the increasing cost of municipal waste disposal, and the encouragement of recycling and reuse, washable nappies can save your household from generating an extra bin bag of rubbish or more per week.  Many councils now offer discounts or cash back for using cloth nappies, some offer trial nappy schemes, we've a list of what is available locally to you here.  If you're concerned about the environmental impact of washable nappies we've links to articles about this and how you can reduce your energy use by using them.

If you're just starting to investigate real nappies at this stage, and perhaps in doubt as to which nappy system to use we've created a simplified  buyers guide to washable nappies - start with our guide to nappy jargon.  To see nappies locally we've listed nappy events such as Nappuccinos (= nappy coffee morning) and contacts locally where you can see the types and brands of nappy available. If you have an event you'd like listed here please let us know.

Originally published as a booklet, a condensed version of How to Nappy is still available in pdf format to download here or we can send you a copy by post.  For midwives, health workers, NCT and antenatal teachers we can send batches for your groups.

We hope How to Nappy is useful and helps you in your quest for real nappy information, if you feel we've missed something out nappy-wise please get in touch.
